REV JOHN HUNTER

Such was the esteem held for the Reverend Dr John Hunter that he was given the title of Honoured Framptonian in 2006, only the fourth person to ever receive the award.

After completing his national service, first with the RAF and then the Royal Navy, during the Second World War he gained a Master’s degree and a Doctorate while in the teaching profession.

He rose to vice-principal of the Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology before retiring in 1990.

His work was not done and, after being a lay pastor and preacher at the Frampton church since 1983, he became its ordained minister and volunteered as chaplain for Leyhill Prison, which he carried on until 2014.

The ardent supporter of Watford Football Club was well-known to not officiate weddings or baptisms if his team was playing at home.

Such was his devotion, he was named the club’s supporter of the year in the 1997-98 season.

After the memorial service, his wife Shirley recalled how much his appointment to the church meant to them both.
